Inhoud
By now you will have already written a substantial amount of research reports and papers as part of various courses. This course, however, is quite different as you will enter the world of preparing grant proposals to apply for research funding of ICT-based innovations within the Life Sciences & Health domains.
The weekly lectures will provide insight into the current state of innovation through information and communication technologies within the Life Sciences and Health Informatics domains, and on how to write successful grant proposals within this domain. The lectures will be presented by both internal and external guest speakers, and course lecturer(s). The weekly workshops will be structured around the CORETEST recommendation for performing an extensive feasibility analysis of a research idea (see Literature section). A CORETEST consists of an investigation of conceptual, organizational, economic, technological and societal aspects of an innovative idea. Issues to be covered include:
  • brainstorming towards an innovative idea,
  • developing a conceptual model of the intended venture,
  • exploring the market and its key players,
  • identifying potential partners,
  • predicting product purchase and usage based on literature and survey results,
  • modeling information exchange and usability, and
  • calculating potential societal gains resulting from implementing the proposed project.
Also managerial tasks like time planning and costs budgeting are integrated throughout the project. You will first try out your pitch within the familiar workshop setting before you will pitch the innovative idea to a professional jury. Then, you will have only limited time to incorporate all feedback before you have to submit the final grant proposal to the teaching staff.
To give you a first impression, in earlier editions of this seminar we have had guest speakers from the Departments of ICS, Chemistry, and Cell Biology, but also from the University Science Shop, Accenture and Deloitte, as well as from the University of Amsterdam. Topics covered include feasibility analysis, the Dutch healthcare sector, biomolecular mass spectrometry and Proteomics, high-throughput screening, decision support in Veterinary science, marketing strategy in Life Sciences innovation, how to write grant proposals, semantic web technology in the life sciences domain, and trends & IT strategy in healthcare innovation.
Finally, regardless of your study profile, this seminar aims to help develop essential skills required in your professional career. For example, as a scientific or industrial researcher you will be required to regularly acquire project funding from governmental agencies (e.g. NWO, ZonMW). As a business/ICT consultant you may get involved in national or international tenders (e.g. Aanbestedingskalender). And last but not least, as an aspiring product software entrepreneur you can attempt to obtain R&D funding specifically for SMEs to develop innovations (e.g. STW, SBIR, Eurostars) or enter your innovative product into one of the many award competitions (e.g. Herman Wijffels innovatieprijs, Website of the year, etc).
