Students learn about methods of digital restoration of sources, gain insight into existing projects using digital methods and learn to use software with which to restore images digitally. Restoration techniques are applied to own research.
Inhoud
In this course theoretical and practical aspects of digital restoration techniques for sources are discussed. Within the theoretical framework questions are tackled about when and to what extent digital restoration is useful and how to deal with ethical principles when changing the content of images. Critical reflection about the advantages and disadvantages of digital restoration applied to research objects across the humanities will round off the theoretical part of the course.
In a more hands-on approach students learn to use digital restoration techniques. These will be applied to practical examples during class. Furthermore, an overview of existing projects which use digital restoration techniques and make available restored images online is given. Students apply the skills learned during this course to an image of their own choice, recording the steps taken when restoring digitally, and reflecting on their own actions critically. The process of restoration and the findings resulting from it will be presented in class and written up in an essay.

Early exit option for international exchange students
Students who are required to return to their home university by the end of December, are allowed to complete the course by 'distance learning' (extra assignments, papers etc) in the month of January, receiving 5 ECTS for the course. Students must always make individual arrangements with the course coordinator before the start of the course.
