Inhoud
Group 1: Doing Dramaturgy in Theatre and Performance
This group is designed to introduce students to different approaches to (the professional field of) dramaturgy, and to actively train the skills that are involved in the practice of dramaturgy. We focus on two dramaturgical skills: dramaturgical feedback and dramaturgical analysis as 'reverse engineering'. The former entails the skill to engage in a productive dialogue with art practitioners about their work, practice and research, whereas the latter entails a dramaturgical mode of looking at and writing about performance and performance texts. Students learn how a performance is the outcome of choices being made by makers and their dramaturges.

Group 2: Writing Dancing
How dance writes (in space and time, but also in society at large) and how one writes about dance is the subject matter of this course. The aim is to develop discursive and writing skills for critically exploring the field of contemporary dance from a dramaturgical point of view. Students become acquainted with experimental practices in choreography and in dramaturgy by attending performances and artistic processes, talks and festivals, as well as with conceptual intersections between critical theory, dramaturgical practice and dance production in scholarly and “independent” literature. This dual engagement with developments in the discourse and practice of dance is complemented with a series of short assignments, which enable students to develop dramaturgical skills while becoming familiar with different registers of writing such as dance criticism, co-authored essays, scores, position papers, feedback reports and dramaturgical analysis.

Career orientation:
Students visit performances and/or festivals, interview and engage in discussion with professionals (artists, dramaturgs, curators, programmers), attend and participate in rehearsals, festivals and/or artistic processes, in order to develop and reflect on their own dramaturgical skills.

Early exit option for international exchange students
Students who are required to return to their home university by the end of December, are allowed to complete the course by 'distance learning' (extra assignments, papers etc) in the month of January, receiving 5 ECTS for the course. Students must always make individual arrangements with the course coordinator before the start of the course.
