Students use the research internship to apply the historical knowledge and skills they already have acquired. At the same time they acquire new knowledge, improve their academic and professional skills, and learn to reflect on their own functioning within an organization.
Students define their own learning goals within the following three domains:
• Orientation: how they expect the internship to contribute to the realization of their ambitions
• Professional knowledge: which professional knowledge they want to acquire or develop?
• Academic and professional skills: which general academic skills they want to acquire or develop

During a research internship students fulfil a specific, individual research assignment at an advanced academic level, resulting in a research report, an academic paper, or any other appropriate form of academic dissemination. In addition to the research they carry out, the students are encouraged to participate in the day-to-day work of the organization or research group they work with.
