Through a hands-on approach students learn, first of all, how to turn a general research theme into specific set of questions that can be answered with the available source material. Second, students learn how to organize the actual research, including careful planning and logging of the work they do. Third, students experiment with different forms of reporting of the results of their research, including a literature review, a research report, a poster, and a blogpost.

In order to make an independent contribution to research that is both scholarly and socially relevant, students have to learn how to carry out academic research. In Utrecht we believe that, students have to work alongside experienced researchers in order to become a good historians. In this Research Seminar students participate in ongoing research projects of our departmental staff. They assist in the collection and analysis of data from primary and secondary sources.
Career orientation:
Poster presentations teach students how to present the results of their highly specialized research to a broader audience.
