The successful participant has acquired the skills necessary to study medieval texts in manuscript. The participant will be able to go beyond the printed editions of both narrative and documentary texts, giving him the basic tools to read medieval bookhand and cursive. The course presupposes some knowledge of Latin, as most of the texts chosen have been written in that language. Completion of the course gives access to the course Medieval Written Culture.

A series of reading exercises, enabling students to acquire the ability to read medieval scripts used both in single sheet documents and books. The texts are mainly written in Latin. Background is also provided on the systems of abbreviation and punctuation, on palaeography, diplomatic and chronology.

Skills in transcribing medieval texts in manuscript, mainly in Latin.
