Inhoud
An advanced course, covering the current state of affairs in the field of Medieval Studies. Using the theoretical frameworks from 'Fundamentals of AMRS', this course focuses on the problems scholars in Medieval Studies are currently facing and the various solutions they have found. Medieval Studies feature a wide spectrum of disciplines and currents. This course is meant as a critical introduction to these multiple approaches, methods and topics. In a series of seminars, attention will be paid, a.o. to 'new' sources and their exegesis; new areas of study; the major theories in the fields of history, literature, and art as they apply to medieval studies. Which theories are currently en vogue in medieval studies? What is the relationship between these theories and the ways in which we select and use our sources? What are their strengths and weaknesses and how did the modern disciplines and sub-disciplines come about? And what about the place of the medievalist in present-day society?
