Cursusdoelen
The aim of this course is to provide students with in-depth knowledge and understanding of the literature and culture of one of the main ethnic groups in the United States, i.e. Native Americans, African Americans, Asian Americans, Latin Americans, or Jewish Americans. Students who complete this course will be able to identify key aspects of the experience of the ethnic group in question and analyze the literary means by which these are portrayed. Building on course readings and class discussions of primary and secondary texts students will be prepared to conduct further independent research to produce original scholarly papers on (a) literary work(s) by (an) author(s) from the ethnic group studied in the course.
Inhoud
This course will focus on the rich literary tradition of one of the main American ethnic groups in its historical, social, and cultural context. Among the questions that will come up for discussion are: What is the relation between the writers of the minority group in question and "mainstream" American literature, and how has this evolved over time? How are the relations between American society at large and this minority group portrayed in the literature of the latter? How do inter-generational relations within the minority group figure in its literature? And how do these minority writers employ linguistic and literary strategies as means of dramatizing their ethnic experience within the broader traditions of the dominant culture?

If you are an incoming exchange student whose exchange period ends in December, then you have the option to finish the entire course before your departure. At the start of the course, please consult the course coordinator about what will be required of you and when.
