The successful participant will (i) have acquired command of the basic theoretical concepts of Irish-English language; (ii) be able to apply these concepts to the literature and culture of Ireland; (iii)) be able to undertake and write a research paper in these areas.

This course offers in introduction to the lingustics of Irish-English, the oldest variety of spoken and written English outside Britain, and then uses the history of the 'Hiberno-English Language Question' as a means of investigating the literature and culture of Ireland from the seventeenth century to the present day.
