The successful participant will (i) have acquired command of the basic theoretical concepts of the study of first and second language acquisition, and of the role of a proposed general human ability to acquire language; (ii) know and understand how these concepts apply to relevant acquisition data; and (iii) be able to apply the acquired knowledge in analyses of small sets of such data.

This course introduces students to the scientific study of first and second language acquisition, separately and in comparison with one another. This course addresses the phenomenon of language acquisition from two angles. The first half focuses on the acquisition of English as a first or native language (L1) during childhood (from birth to age 5). The second half focuses on the acquisition of English as a second or foreign language (L2A) during adolescence and adulthood. Similarities and differences between the two processes will be addressed and investigated.
