Prosody of English and Dutch

The successful participant will (i) have acquired command of the basic theoretical concepts of prosody, in particular intonation, phrasing and rhythm; (ii) have gained insight into the major prosodic similarities and differences between English and Dutch; (iii) be able to apply these concepts to given and self-collected empirical data; (iv) be familiar with core analytic tools and methods of data collection in these areas; (v) be able to write a research paper in these areas.
Inhoud
This course introduces students to the scientific study of prosodic phenomena, in particular intonation, phrasing and rhythm stress, rhythm, phrasing and intonation, and their interrelations. The languages to be studied are English and Dutch. Similarities and differences between these languages at the word and utterance level will be investigated. Students will collect speech samples from native speakers and learn to analyse these by standard techniques, and to report on the results of the analysis.

Early exit option for international exchange students
 
Students who are required to return to their home university by the end of December, are allowed to choose an early exit option. Students must always make individual arrangements with the course coordinator. In general, there are two options that can be facilitated:
1. Finishing the course before Christmas break, receiving 5 ECTS for the course.
2. Completing the course by 'distance learning' (extra assignments, papers etc) in the month of January, receiving 7.5 ECTS for the course.
