Course goals
Language
By the end of the course students should be able in oral communication to:
  • perform tasks with linguistic ease, confidence, and competence.
  • explain in detail and narrate fully and accurately in all time frames.
  • discuss a variety of topics concretely.
  • use precise vocabulary and intonation to express meaning and often show great fluency and ease of speech.
By the end of the course students should be able in written communication to:
  • write about a variety of topics with significant precision and detail.
  • handle informal and formal correspondence according to appropriate conventions.
  • write summaries and reports of a factual nature.
  • narrate and describe in the major time frames.
  • have good control of a range of grammatical structures and a fairly wide general vocabulary.

Culture
The main purpose of the culture & society classes is to provide an understanding of present-day Dutch society & culture. Attention will be given to various issues pertaining to Dutch culture & society today. Through the reading of articles covering the culture of the Netherlands and the Dutch students learn to understand mainly the inside perspective, in other words the Dutch way of approaching and discussing cultural and society issues.
Content
The language part of the course helps students to improve and develop skills and strategies necessary to successfully handle oral and written tasks and social situations.
The cultural part of the course provides information that enables the student to  understand cultural & society aspects of the Netherlands.
This course is designed for students who are fluent in Dutch, but who have never received any formal education in Dutch.
The speaking and writing entrance level is Advanced Low, as defined in the ACTFL Guidelines. The exit level for speaking and writing is Advanced High.



Students who wish to participate first have to contact the instructor of the course.
 
Format
In the language classes the classroom language is Dutch. The main activity is the use of Dutch in a variety of oral and written communication tasks performed in small groups, in pairs or with the whole class. The instructor provides input, instruction and explanations. Students in this course are expected to come to class with their own questions and analyze their own learning problems and learning needs.
In the culture classes topics on Dutch society and culture will be introduced and discussed. Reading materials on Dutch culture will be studied in English and/or Dutch.
Students are expected to give a presentation in Dutch.
