Medical Ethics and Philosophy of Medicine

Course goals
Upon completion of this course participants have the ability to:
• to recognize and critically analyse ethical issues in medicine, public health and health care;
• to understand the major frameworks of ethical analysis and practical tools in biomedical and public health ethics for assessing these issues;
• to explain how particular arguments are related to more general normative ethical theories;
• to explain how anthropological assumptions and technological developments play a role in the moral debate;
• to adopt a clear position on a chosen ethical issue and to substantiate it (in a paper).
 
Content
Is euthanasia of demented patients in a progressed state morally permissible? Do we have a moral duty to develop and use enhancement technologies? What should government, industry and individuals do in order to tackle problems like obesity? Biomedical ethics is an interesting and complex branch of applied ethics. After a short introduction, we will delve into new and controversial issues in the field of genetics, end of life decisions, screening program and enhancement technology. We will study the theoretical approaches, concepts, arguments and methods used to deal with these ethical issues including the influence of hidden (anthropological or moral) assumptions and technological developments within the different positions. During the course students choose one of the topics for an in-depth analysis and critically examine a certain viewpoint or position resulting in a paper.  

Career orientation:  Students will learn what type of roles ethicistst in the field of health care ethics play and the type of expertise needed. 

Early exit option
Students who are required to return to their home university by the end of December, are allowed to complete the course by 'distance learning' (extra assignments, papers etc) in the month of January, receiving 5 ECTS for the course. Students must always make individual arrangements with the course coordinator before the start of the course.
