Course goals
After completing this course students are able to:
  • Gain an understanding of the content of social psychology: research done, theories developed
  • Contextualize this content in a scientific and social history of the discipline
  • Critically reflect on the classic studies in the field
  • Train the formulation of adequate social psychological research questions and methods
  • Carry out a social psychological research project
Content
This course demonstrates how social psychology can illuminate our understanding of social relationships and processes. It introduces the history, theories, and methods of social psychology and encourages a critical view on social psychological research. We review classic and recent social psychology studies on social influence, interpersonal attraction, social cognition, aggression, prejudice etc.
 
Format
There are two meetings each week, for 15 weeks. In the first two weeks of the course, there will be lectures and class discussions. From the 3rd week onwards, student presentations are included and work on research projects starts. All students are expected to complete the weekly readings and actively participate in the class discussions. Students read the literature and prepare it in a critical way.
