Course goals
After completing the course students are able to:

 
  • apply the comparative method to a number of concrete cases
  • critically assess how the checks and balances principle is applied in the case-study context
  • critically assess the existing gaps between democratic institutions as designed by national constitutions and democratic practices
  • examine the nature of relationship between formal and informal institutions in the case-study context
  • examine, compare and critically assess different models of democracy  
Content
The first part of the course examines the fundamental assumptions of the comparative method and the basic theories of institution in today's political science. Students subsequently examine the institutional setting of the State, the relationships between political and economic agencies and the related current challenges in two specific areas: The Netherlands and the United Kingdom. The key themes of the first part of the course are: legislatures; government structures; bureaucracies; constitutions and the division of powers; electoral systems; political party systems; interest groups. The second part of the course focuses on a variety of models of democracy.  

Format
Class sessions will focus on discussion of selected readings and problems related to them. The instructor will introduce background information. Questions and objections will be explored during class. Students are expected to actively engage in class discussion and to prepare on the basis of the assigned bibliography.
