Course module: UCSCIBIO23
UCSCIBIO23
Human and Animal Physiology
Course info
Course codeUCSCIBIO23
EC7.5
Course goals
After completing this course students are able to:
  • describe a mammal as an integrated complex of organs and regulatory mechanisms
  • write and present on a challenging physiological topic
  • collaborate intensively with other students
  • ask critical questions regarding physiological topics
Content
In this course the function of the different organ systems in the mammalian body is discussed in depth. Special emphasis is placed on the neural and hormonal regulation of all these organs in order to maintain relatively stable internal conditions (= homeostasis), e.g. a constant body temperature or the right balance between energy intake and expenditure. Because many physiological mechanisms are often alike for humans and other mammals we do use examples from different mammals. Nevertheless, we often focus on human physiology because this course is part of the premed track for future SUMMA students.

Format
During 20 lectures the following topics are presented and discussed: CNS, PNS, senses, hormonal regulation/endocrinology, respiration, circulation, kidneys, digestion, energy balance, growth control, reproduction and development. Students are encouraged to read the relevant chapters from the book before class. During class students are stimulated to ask questions.
Sometimes class hours are used to work on assignments, but assignments are also part of the homework. One of the assignments is to answer questions from so-called mock-exams and present the answers  in class.
Four to six students collectively write a paper and give a 15-min oral presentation on a chosen topic. The paper is presented in the discussion/opinion format practiced in modern scientific review journals. It describes and analyzes the state of knowledge on a particular topic.

Next to the book Human Physiology students now have to buy 1) access to the electronic learning environment (ELO) from Pearson called; Mastering Anatomy and Physiology and 2) access to the e-Text. These three things are sold as one package. If students buy it online from Pearson it will cost 68,99 pounds;
http://catalogue.pearsoned.co.uk/educator/product/Human-Physiology-An-Integrated-Approach-with-MasteringAP-Global-Edition/9781292095028.page

If students order it through UCU campus, another Dutch book store or bol.com then the cost will be around 90 €. Students have to use this ISBN number to buy the correct package; ISBN-13: 9781292095028 (Beware: only this ISBN includes access to Mastering A&P and the e-reader).

Students who already have the book, for example an older edition bought from other students, still have to buy the E-reader & access to Mastering Anatomy and Physiology online, which will cost £50.99 GBP. Students have to use this website to buy access: http://www.pearsonmylabandmastering.com/northamerica/masteringaandp/ .
