Course goals
After completing this course students are able to:
  • explain the major concepts of human and animal physiology, development, and evolution,
  • describe the contemporary issues related to these general biological topics.
Content
This course focuses on the many intriguing aspects of human biology. Examples from the animal kingdom are used to illustrate the context of human physiology, development, and evolution. The program is designed around three main issues each to be covered in a 5 week cycle of intense studying:

Format
The course is divided in three units, listed above. The studying of each issue involves: reading and studying of selected textbook chapters ( Biology: A Global Approach 10th edition Chapters 40-50 and parts of Chapters 18, 21-24 and 32-34); interactive lectures and problem solving sessions; presenting and summarizing news items (in groups); presenting a poster (in groups) on different topics in the field of evolution; writing a paper on a topic of choice in the field of human and/or animal biology (2000-2400 words); and three written tests.
Next to the textbook a popular science paperback is read and discussed. The book of choice is:  “The Story of the Human Body.
