Content
This course focuses on culture and language, history and art of the Spanish-speaking peoples. The starting point is Spain and Spanish America today, the current societies and the issues they face. Language learning aims at communication with native speakers of the language: on acquiring the functional tools for establishing and maintaining contacts with Spanish speaking persons.
Culture, history, art and a range of related issues are addressed via texts in English as well as in Spanish, and detailed on a weekly basis in the course description. The study guide contains information needed for acquiring a functional command of the language at the Intermediate level. The study guide also marks pace and progress, and deadlines through the semester.

Format
Contact hours focus on language practice and discussions on culture and history. Students present on cultural and linguistic topics related to the course contents. Students complete obligatory self-study assignments before class, and access equally required ICT/CALL materials as indicated in class.

Grades
The tests for the language component of the course together (60%) must average at least a C-. If this average is under a C-, then the student cannot move on to the next level. If a student nonetheless wants to continue to Language & Culture II, course admission needs to be approved by the instructor, who may ask for extra work to be completed.
