Inhoud
This interdisciplinary course teaches you how gender (also: sexual difference) and ethnicity affect the production, consumption and interpretation of cultural artefacts. Learning to look through the lense of 'gender' and 'ethnicity' you will experience how cultural and social scientific approaches will have to be combined in critical analysis. You will be trained in how to use these interdisciplinary approaches when it comes to the gender sensitive analysis of different objects, genres and media: literature, history, film and other forms of popular culture, language and the new media. A red thread running through the course are 'woman warriors:' women who contest and challenge societal norms. Examples range from Maria Magdalena to Lara Croft, from Sarah Baartman to Phoolan Devi. This course is a faculty-wide introduction to the minors in Gender studies and Postcolonial Studies (open to all students) and to the major in Postcolonial- and Genderstudies (part of the bachelor Language and Culture Studies). This interdisciplinary course teaches you how gender (also: sexual difference) and ethnicity affect the production, consumption and interpretation of cultural artefacts.
