Insight in the rise and impact of media technologies (photography, film, video, digital media) on the visual arts. Insight in the relation between mass media and the arts. Being able to interpret various art works and theoretical readings of this topic.

In this course we will look at the interplay that exists between the visual arts and mass media technologies. The course offers a chronological survey of key issues and topics that have to do with the introduction of mass media such as video, photography, film and, digital media in the arts. We will look at their impact on the development of the visual arts and consider modern and contemporary arts preoccupation with visual and mass media cultures.
Inhoud
What makes a photograph, film or video a work of art? When did these media enter the arts? How where they received by artists, critics and theorists and what was and is their impact on traditional artistic media, concept and disciplines?  We will consider the rise and development of photography and the aesthetic debates that went with it in the 19th and early 20th century. We will also consider its institutional reception and look at how photography as art developed itself further in the 20th and 21st century. The course also looks at the rise of avant-garde film, the expanded cinema of the 1960’s and 70s’ as well as to the development of video art and the current hegemony in the arts of the so called cinematic.
