Goals:
  • Knowledge of discrete-event simulation models
  • Knowledge of methods for experimental research with discrete-event simulation including statistical methods
  • Knowledge of methods for combined optimization and simulation
  • Knowledge of real-world applications of discrete-event simulation
  • Ability to model problems from applications as a discrete-event simulation problem
  • Ability to perform a scientific sound simulation study including statistical analysis
Inhoud
Simulation is the imitation of systems or processes in the computer to be able to obtain information about their performance. Because of the increasing power of computers, it has become an important tool for decision support. In this course discrete-event simulation is studied, which means that the state of the system changes at discrete moments in time (step by step). Uncertainties are included in the model by means of stochastic variables. Focus is on applications in transportation and logistics. Course topics include simulation modelling, validation and verification, input and output analysis, random number generators, queueing theory and inventory theory.

The basic lectures are based on the book: Simulation modeling and analysis, A.M. Law, McGraw-Hill Higher Education. ISBN 0071103368 (foruth edition). Also available at the computer science library (CGN as well as BBL).
Boek
The book is not mandatory . Slides of the lectures will be published on the website of the course. It might be interesting to obtain the third edition of the book at a reduced price.
