After completing this course students are able to:
  • investigate and visualize functions of one or two variables,
  • solve (systems of) linear and quadratic equations,
  • differentiate and integrate a broad set of standard functions,
  • optimize functions of one or more variables, with and without constraint,
  • work with probabilities and some basic discrete and continuous probability distributions,
  • make use of the symbolic manipulation program Mathematica to aid calculations and problem solving, including solving (systems of) equations, differentiation and integration.
Inhoud
This course introduces students to a large number of elementary but important mathematical concepts and techniques that have a wide range of applications in natural and social sciences. They acquire the quantitative reasoning and mathematical manipulations skills required for courses in life, medical, and earth sciences, as well as several sub-disciplines within social sciences such as economics, psychology, sociology, and political sciences. Topics include basic and discrete mathematics, matrices, graphs and derivatives, functions of multiple variables and (constrained) optimization, basic integration with applications on probability distributions.

Format
In addition to the four class hours a week spent on lectures and guided practical work, students are expected to work for ten hours a week on average on self-study reading and problem solving, doing take-home assignments to be handed in and studying for the exams.
