In a research seminar instructors train students to conduct independent research into aspects of postcolonial critique in dialogue with other disciplinary fields. Students learn to apply postcolonial theories in a comparative context and use interdisciplinary methods. Students study one or more aspects related to the theme of the seminar, write reports and reviews and a final paper based on their engagement with the themes of the course and their individual research.
Inhoud
The seminar will bring under review postcolonial theories which are relevant for the understanding of our contemporary global world. In particular colonial history and conflicts, postcolonial issues and political transitions will be analysed and discussed. The seminar aims at widening the understanding of mediated culture within a transnational framework, by highlighting how questions of gender, ethnicity and diaspora are represented and conveyed. The students will be asked to question their ideas on value judgment of works of art, literature, cinema and new media practices which are culturally different, i.e. coming from different aesthetics and political traditions. New transitions in postcolonial societies and global dynamics will be addressed such as transitional justice, ecocriticism, transnational migrations, terrorism, neo-orientalism, cultural industries and exoticism, digital highways and social networks and democratic changes. We will therefore be concerned with issues in postcolonial critique in connection with transnational feminist theories, ecocriticism, cultural industry, new media studies, conflict studies, visual culture, cinema studies, and cultural theory among others.
