Inhoud
Why is it that gender and sexuality have become such strong markers of religious and anti-religious profiling in western culture during the past decades? This course seeks to analyze this two-sided phenomenon in a gender critical and interdisciplinary perspective by discussing explanations and theoretical approaches from the fields of theology, religious studies, cultural philosophy and gender studies. After a general introduction we will discuss several theoretical approaches that offer explanations for the increased interest in gender and sexuality as markers of religious identity (Christian, Jewish, Islamic) in and towards modern western societies. Readings include the approach of sociology of religion following Weber and Durkheim, psycho-analysis and cultural philosophy following Foucault and Kristeva, gender and queer studies in theology, and cultural anthropology (a.o. Mary Douglas, Saba Mahmood, Lara Deeb). Secondly we will apply and valorise these theoretical models of explanation by studying two famous controversies over gender and sexuality as marker of (anti-)religious identity: the film Submission (2004) and Madonna´s crucifixion scene (Confessions Tour, 2006). Thirdly, all participants will analyze and present a self chosen case of gender and/or sexuality as marker of (anti-)religious identity using the theoretical frameworks discussed and developed in this course.
