Korte beschrijving
The primary aim of this course is to provide knowledge and understanding of the issues in conservation medicine and wildlife management to which veterinary science can contribute.
Through this elective course aimed at supplementing the missing links with the other disciplines, the veterinarian becomes a valuable partner with its own specific expertise in wildlife related issues.
It’s an international oriented conservation medicine course, and open for international students, also from other disciplines concerned with conservation medicine. The course will be presented in English to stimulate foreign students to enrol.
The subjects during this course are:
1. Introduction to Conservation Medicine (50% of the time)
2. Data retrieval systems in relation to wildlife management
3. Comparative morphology of wildlife
4. Pathological aspects of the most important wildlife diseases
5. Infectious diseases of wildlife
6. Wildife diseases in the (sub)tropics
7. Zoonoses from wildlife
8. Epidemiological aspects of wildlife diseases.
9. Population dynamics and interactions with environment, predators and parasites.
10. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and its role in biological risk assessment
11. Wildlife as bioindicators for environmental contamination
12. Practical aspects of wildlife management and wildlife hygiene in The Netherlands
13. Care and rehabilitation of orphaned or traumatized wild animals and oil spill victims
14. Ethical, and welfare aspects of wild and feral animal management
15. Behavioural aspects of wild and feral animal management
16. Reproductive technologies in conservation
17. Contraceptive techniques in management of wild animal populations.
18. Capture, immobilisation and culling of wild and feral animals
19. (Inter)national legislation with regard to wildlife management
20. Veterinary aspects of translocation and reintroduction of wild animals
21. Wildlife forensics
22. Communications through public media
23. Possibilities for international projects for veterinary students
Doelstellingen
The primary aim of this course is to provide knowledge and understanding of the issues in conservation medicine and wildlife management to which veterinary science can contribute.
In particular graduates will have:
knowledge of-
-the most important health and welfare issues in wild and feral animal populations, including ecological, epidemiological, ethical, societal, legal and practical aspects
-recent literature and developments in the field
-data retrieval systems for wildlife related issues
- awareness systems for wildlife related issues
skills to-
-perform a literature search on a wildlife/conservation medicine related issue
-perform a risk analysis in relation to health and welfare issues for humans, animals and ecosystems
-find information and integrate knowledge between fields
-work in multidisciplinary teams
-plan and prioritise learning, be self critical, seek and respond to feedback
-advise on management of wild animal populations
-motivate an audience to include veterinary expertise in the management of wild and feral animal populations
an attitude compatible with-
-animal welfare and conservation, including wise use of natural resources
-exemplary standards of professional behaviour
-a commitment to continuing education
