Inhoud

This seminar is intended for foreign, non-Dutch speaking students only. Personal attendance is mandatory. Permission to be absent from the course is only granted in pressing cases and subject to special conditions. The main themes are "chain communication" and "identity issues in chains". The chain communication aspect confronts us with the challenge of communicating critical data on a national or international scale within the boundaries of the law. The identity aspect confronts us with the challenge of monitoring and blocking free riding on somebody else's identity with malicious intent. Identity theft and other forms of misuse of identities is fast becoming a major problem in many countries. However, there is still another challenge to be answered in future. In western countries, freedom, individuality and privacy protection govern the ways in which we lawfully communicate personal data and use or check personal identities. Will these information infrastructures and procedures be different if the communication takes place within or with countries having different, e.g. Asian, legal cultures? In what way can these cultural differences be reflected in our large-scale communication systems and procedures?
