Familiarize students with scientific literature; learn to formulate their own research questions; find their way around in 'semantic Holland'. |

This research seminar offers an orientation on the
field of semantics, an interdisciplinary collaboration of logicians and
linguists who investigate aspecs of meaning in natural language. The purpose of this course is to become
familiar with semantic methods by closely reading and discussing a selection of
articles, and working on specific research questions. This year's theme is
Optimality theoretic semantics, a recent development in linguistic theory that
grew out of connectionist theories of cognition and neutral networks.
